Maybe I'm wrong...but it seems DA has seen better days, many great artists that used to use this site exclusively for years are gone, it seems like comments on even exceptional art here are much lower in number than what I remember.  Even looking at the quality of the Daily Deviations and the number of comments on them that the overall level of interest in the site has gone down.  I wish I could get a chance to implement some changes that would help, but sadly that won't happen and even if an offer was sort of extended I'm fairly certain it would go without me getting credited which I'm not willing to do anymore not because I'm a megalomaniac, but simply because there has to be accountability and transparency for various changes.

Most people will say it's all because of facebook and other social media, which to an extent is true, however so much change in such a short period of time making the site less and less user friendly/goal focused hasn't helped matters.  Even though a lot of people complain about the complexity of the upload process that's one of the few things I think that has helped tremendously in terms of helping people find things they want quickly and exposing people to similar things that they are watching, :+fav: ing etc.

Anyway, had to vent a bit thanks to those left that listened.
I haven't been posting much art here anyway so it's not like it will be a huge hit or change for most people that watch me.  I guess this was a longtime coming and I've been thinking about this for a while, but I won't be posting anymore art on Deviantart.  I'm not going to delete everything in my gallery, because that's just childish in my opinion.  I'll be curtailing my activity to maintaining the groups that I currently moderate as best as I can.  I'll also be maintaining connectedness to the people I've started my small studio with.  I'll also probably do a journal about where my art will be once I've figured that out for anyone else that may be curious.

The reasons are many and I'm not going to go into a lot of detail.  One thing for me though is that in any social environment when the number of people on my shit list becomes larger than the number of people I'm cool with or the people with whom I have a neutral relationship with combined it's no longer a fun environment and there are just too many alternate options to really consider staying in a toxic virtual environment for me.

Be safe folks,
Butch

P.S. - My contact email here works, so if you need to get a hold of me you can use that one or any other one of mine that I've given you.
...I don't know in reading the report it looks like the dude had fallen on hard times and dealing in shady business, but no one deserves to be murdered.  There is a new ThunderCats television program in the works, but it looks like the producers weren't interested in getting any input from Perry to begin with.  Even with some of the problems I had with the storyline it was still a highly influential piece of entertainment in my young life, so I'll check it out and view it as a homage to the ability and great creative imagination of Stephen Perry.

Oooops, forgot the story link: www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jun/…

...Also long live the legend of Frazetta!  I can't wait to see John Carter of Mars whenever it's finally released.

I don't come into your home, after being invited, and then unload a paper bag full of dog shit on your carpets because I have respect for you.

RESPECT

2 : an act of giving particular attention : CONSIDERATION

I've never understood how so many people just blindly accept disrespect as "Freedom of Speech."  As an American I'm very much interested in and uphold the ideas of freedom of speech, but I don't ignore the fact that the limits of the concept are infringement on another's ability to pursue life, liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.  How much happiness can one find in a society that persecutes them for religious beliefs that have lead them, personally, to pursue nothing but benevolence and peace?  Everyone knows that it is disrespectful to draw inflammatory images of Muhammad and yet people do it anyway which only feeds the Muslim propaganda machine that says that "White" world is waging a war against Islam and dispenses with the notion that various countries are fighting terrorism targeted at them.

I think it was John Berger that said that people for the most part don't believe in religion as a faith anymore(any kind of religion).  People only fear or revere pain which would make "Pain" regardless of which side you stand on a defacto faith/religion for most people.  It's a sad commentary on society, if the religion of pain is the only true faith system but I'm starting to believe that it's true.

So this will be the Asuarus' big bag of secret cutting edge info 3D blocks. (g-o-s-s-i-p)

I first want to say that this is your space so feel free to chime in to talk about the 3D industry, as you see it, whenever you like here.  Also, should you find any interesting tidbits be sure to shoot me a note.

AutoDesk doing their "Robots in Disguise" routine
First up is news that you may or may not have heard about everyone's favorite bully AutoDesk. Due to ballooning costs, a continually souring user base opinion of their company and software applications and among a more crowded and growing competitive field they are contemplating change in all of their 3D applications in very major ways.  Rumor has had it that Maya has been getting ready for a major overhaul for months and then this popped out:

For those that aren't familiar (I'm a Maya user mainly so it took me a little while at first)  This is 3D Studio Max, or at least a mock-up of a majorly revised version.  What's different is the Node view, which is not currently in Max in any form really and it's in the middle of the screen.  The node view looks like XSI's shader tree/ICE interface and the smaller graph on the upper right corner that looks freakishly like Maya's dependency graph.  This transformation is NOT superficial, it's actually indicative of major shifting at the core of Max because 3D Studio Max has historically revolved around a "Stack" structure.  It's been rumored for quite some time that Maya has been going through a significant amount of changes behind the scenes...so a core of the new AutoDesk combined Maya/XSI/Max software core could be already fully functional and the most powerful force in the universe just waiting to be unveiled.  This image was part of an internal company meeting/demonstration and was leaked.  AutoDesk subsequently made a formal statement and published the image as something that could happen and they are calling the secret development Excalibur.  My suspicion is that all of the applications will run on the same core with different user interfaces to satisfy the three different user bases in short order.

Mac ZBrush could be close to complete

For Mac users ZBrush 3.5R3 could be fully functional and in the wild in a matter of days or weeks and not months.  I was able to spy this message over at ZBrush Central which bodes well for Mac and PC users alike.(It's a user query thread about Mac ZBrush where a company rep said the Mac release is not months away)
www.zbrushcentral.com/showthre…

It was Mac development that lead the Pixologic team in the direction of developing the GoZ interchange format and "Live" connection interface protocol between ZBrush and several hot apps using a specially made file format as a conduit.  AutoDesk's continued effort to close and change file format protocols without informing "Partner Companies" with updated information virtually blocks the import of all but the most basic of error free file imports from non-AutoDesk software necessitated a change and developing on the Mac allowed Pixologic to engineer a unique solution.  I have it on good authority that Pixologic did in fact demo their "in progress" GoZ "Live" connection technology, running under Windows, at a modo user's group recently so that too is on the way.

MeshMixer

Groboto...why aren't more people using this?

My parting shot is a double shout out:

1.) to G.A. Priest :icongapriest: here on DA for getting to do some demo work for a 3D software product roll out that's been out for a little while now:

2.) Groboto automagically generates mathematically complex groupings of of ordered 3D shapes and forms.  Now one can export these things as ready to sculpt single meshes for a multitude of apps with sculpting capabilities like ZBrush, MudBox, or 3DCoat.
(Probably would help to add a URL, so here ya go: groboto.com/)

...Oh yeah there's yet another 3D sculpting app that's coming from an indie developer that I'll talk more about next time.  Until then use 3D as the tool it's intended to be and *go confidently in the direction of your dreams, without fear.

What are your thoughts on a public apology?

I'm not a huge golf enthusiast, but will admit to being enamored with Woods' meteoric rise to fame and the way that that process single handedly plucked professional Golf out of obscurity and almost made the sport global.

Because of who he is it seems that there's a line that's been drawn in the public with regard to this infidelity issue.  On one side it seems other pro athletes and retired pro athletes generally seem to think that a public apology is unnecessary, because it's a private matter. Journalists and many others in the public eye, on the other hand, have expressed through various outlets that Woods as a public persona is obligated to make a statement/apology.(Which happened today)  As an adult individual I tend agree with the pro athletes/retired pros in part.  The problem I see with sticking the "No Comment" path is that Tiger Woods is an athlete that's really the only superstar athlete in golf and the only professional athlete that's always appealed more to kids and young kids than a lot of professional athletes and in a more personal way, because he's more or less the "Only Guy" or at least the only recognizable guy under 40 in golf.  Is that unfair to him?  Absolutely...Greg "The Great White Shark" Norman cheated on his wife Laura Andrassy without having the diagnosis of being a sex addict, divorced her and married the mistress before the ink on the divorce papers dried, but he was able to do all of that privately and without the embarrassment of relentless public scrutiny and digging that unearthed all of his past indiscretions probably even before he could tell his wife if he even did or would have done that.  With Woods though there are a lot of benefits on the other side of the inequity and I can think of a lot worse "Unfair" life situations to be in where a public apology would be the least of someone's concerns from a personal standpoint.  Being someone in his unique position I just don't think he could start playing golf tomorrow, never say anything and be ok with it or not have to deal with more scrutiny.  What do you think?

It's frustrating when you're told to pursue education as a means to prosperity, you find an area in school that drives your passion and you excel...Then when you're done and looking at more school you find out that there's a mountain of people that resent you for having that education.

The Things Artists must Bear, but not without better tools

I just saw a moving documentary film on PBS. American Masters:Marvin Gaye: What's Going On (#2102)  I learned so much more about Marvin Gaye than I what I'd previously known and found out just how tortured a soul he was.  I feel like it's critically important for every artist to see this documentary whether you like the music or not, because regardless of what each individuals demons are and how much or little those demons effect them in their personal lives there's something to be learned from Marvin's life.  The idea of "Pleasing Fans" I think is the thing that drove Gaye to the point extreme shame and I guess that's one thing that I've noticed with a lot of artists on DA, myself included at times, where the need or the want to have "fans", to be liked, popular, noticed, seen or whatever will or almost will drive us to make art that is not authentic to who we are and that is supremely self-destructive in ways that are unimaginably insidious.

"...During the tour, friends commented that during the performance of 'Sexual Healing', Gaye felt as if he had to please his female fans' sexual desires of him. He came on stage wearing a robe and pajamas and at times stripped down to his underwear resulting in what David Ritz later described as 'a sad parody of himself'"

I saw a photograph of this in the documentary and just felt an overwhelming sadness as Gaye's head was hung low and he just looked so filled with shame.

Please tell as many people as you possibly can to watch this documentary and please let me know when you do.  It looks like PBS hasn't posted it on line yet, but they will so keep checking back if you can't see it on PBS.

The good old days

"Auld Lang Syne" is Scottish in origin literally means "old long ago," Apparently the meaning can be translated as "for old time's sake" or "the good old days."  The song is basically an ode to what has already happened whether those things are totally forgettable as I would like to look at 2009 (like a lot of other people) or whether they were good they are all part of the past now.

Be Safe and Happy New Year!
Butch

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o thine,
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne

I just don't know about this...

It could be that my day hasn't been going great, but I just had this sense of extreme clarity on things...a lot of things.  I don't know that "Groups" are really going to be a good thing for DeviantArt over the long term, at least not in terms of how artists interact with each other which is a HUGE part of what makes this community successful.  In the past DeviantArt has been pretty individual centric which has been a powerful yet understated draw for artists to the web community just for the pure simple fact that that runs counter to the "Clique" model that runs the world and ruins millions of untapped lives every year.  In the past I've seen a lot of people talk about how addictive it is to come to DeviantArt, but the unstated part is that they get that positive charge because they don't personally feel as if they are personally being judged and that may be the more important nugget to take away for marketing and promotion types. Groups, should one decide to participate in one or more changes the feel of the community pretty dramatically.

For all of the extra exposure that you can get by being part of a group there is a seedy underbelly developing that seems to be recreating that infamous "High-School Clique" social model virtually and honestly it's feeling more like a MySpace type website as a result.  I remember people being angry about certain people being friend-ed by other people and others not being friend-ed, being left out of groups, and then being in the "Cool Groups" but not really being able to contribute much or have others contribute much of anything positive to them back when I was actually on MySpace.  That MySpace environment was extremely abrasive and it just generally felt like being a "Tiger Woods Story" and the the public response out of a gossip rag every time you logged in.  Now I'm starting to hear the same types of things from artists, it's different because it's an art site but the feeling seems identical.  If this "Highschool Clique" culture becomes a major part of DA it will be leaving possibly a large and growing chunk of individuals feeling like they've been judged poorly and left out of the "Cool Groups" or not allowed to participate.  The more unfortunate part could be that these are people that many times are already seen as outcasts in their normal day to day routine where DA is a "Release" for them.  Again, maybe I'm looking at this through flame engulfed lenses because I had a bad day, but it's the way I'm seeing things right now.

Let the Child in you OUT!

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by Clement Clarke Moore
or Henry Livingston

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Tiger Woods...

WHY?!?

Just curious to get feedback on this since it's become the biggest news story of the last two weeks and it's virtually unavoidable unless you live under a rock.  Personally, I feel sorry his wife, his children and even him.  From my standpoint if everything that's coming out is true he has to be the biggest dumbass on planet Earth and maybe he does have some crazy psychological stuff going on, but even with that at a certain point before it gets as out of hand as it looks like it got he should have tried to seek out help before the nuclear explosion happened.  I don't look at the guy as being a hero to me, but I do root for the idea that somewhere in that shell of a man is that guy that everybody thought he was, I want them to work it through and prove that a happy ending is possible even in the extreme of situations, but when woman after woman keeps popping out of the woodwork I don't think anyone could even begin to ask the woman to forgive him.  It would be nice if it worked out, but it seems likely that it won't and that sucks, because as sappy as it sounds personally I'm a pretty family oriented guy at heart and I like happy endings.

-That is all

...More importantly My animal conservation journal is still below, because it's more important than Tiger Woods.

Also, I started a Wildlife/Habitat conservation fanart group that I will be promoting more vigorously in short order...hopefully.  Visit, join if you can and PLEASE note me if you want to help.  I'm going to need help running this thing and I really want it to help create an impact.

The Moon Bear...

<IMG SRC="u1.ipernity.com/13/25/36/67725…"

Brought to my attention by :iconlazymills1986:  I feel it's important enough to try to get it out there as much as I can.  The Moon Bear or the Asiatic Balck Bear is known for it's signature White crescent "Moon" shape patch of fur on it's chest.  In many circumstances the Moon Bear in Asia looks to be poorly managed to the point of egregious abuse for the purposes of harvesting bile for medicinal purposes.  At the very least I would urge those familiar moon bear bile to avoid the use of it knowing that the conditions the bears exist in, for the most part, are horrendous.  Fortunately in the case of the Moon Bear there is organization behind the idea of changing the way that things are.  If you are compassionate about animals like I am please begin educate yourself about this and attempt to do what you can.

IFAW which may be a better known organization to some is also involved:

Also...Some inspirational words from :iconjunkyshtan:

Everything has a begging but not necessarily and end...
When you wake up in the morning... I get a heavy feeling. That's when you realize that the laws of gravity exist, and not just speaking about physics now. Since the moment I wake up, i am surrounded by loneliness and confusion. I feel hit by gravity, it's called REALITY.
I hate it! It's like a nightmare that never ends. It's the place where the possible becomes impossible.... REALITY.
I went home this weekend, to the mountains.
I walk the empty streets quietly, as I see a cord of birds covering the grey sky...
It's nice to see something fly, and keeps on flying...
SO many memories in each place, so empty they are now.
My mind is set on overdrive, I see slow-motion images in my mind and I have little control over them. It's like being in a rehab and your hesitating to reach out for the drug.
I found so many valuable memories back at home, becoming more valuable as time passes. (like everything else)
It's nice to remember the past, so magical that it becomes sad because you realize that you can't turn things back.
In writing I learned that you can capture a moment forever, so it never dies. So with all of this I decided to continue writing as often as I have the opportunity.
..I guess I have no more reasons to look down, even if the page becomes black and expresses nothing else than something empty...
But because yesterday is a dream and tomorrow is just and opinion, I choose to have a HOPE. Because like I said: Everything has a beginning, but not necessarily an end.

Getting to know you...

(Feel free to participate)

Why did you join this site?
It was pretty random for me actually...after finding myself searching for art on the net for inspiration more than a couple of times ended up here and decided to join, because it seemed like there was a lot more going on that archived albums of images here.  So far it's exceeded my expectations in a couple of areas.

What does your username have to do with you? Is it a combination of your favorite things, or a character of yours?
Well...I've had a couple of people ask me this is real life and generally I used to get in to the whole story bit with women that asked that I was attracted to, but those days are most likely past(not a bad thing.) Here goes...Butch is in fact a name given to me by my parents, though it is not my legal name.  The story behind is that when I was an infant at some point my parents got me one of those cute toddler baseball uniforms, Phillies of course, and I had an expression that made my father say something like "He looks like a slugger, his name should be Butch"  There's actually a picture of it somewhere in my parents house and it looks like I had one eye partially shut...personally I've always had the theory that it was probably gas that caused the look. (lol) The 007 part is just a small homage to a fictional character I've always liked.

What is your current icon of?
snapshots of a 3D metal statue centurion character that I created for my Nommo:New Stories of RA! story.  Essentially the ideal soldier representing the ideas of heroism mostly closely aligned to SuperMan and I feel pretty well aligned with that set of ideas myself.

Another image of the Centurion in a different environment that I did for the DA "Yellow Day" event a good while back:

How many watchers do you have and how many people are you currently watching?
No exact numbers here, but think I have 100-150 watchers and I watch over 2,000 Deviants partially.

Do you have more than one account?
No

Name 3 of your favorite artists on DA.
(3 spaces really isn't enough)

How many people on here do you actually know in reality? Post their avatars.
Interestingly I know no one that I converse with on here in real life, aside from a few phone calls here and there.  In fact, unfortunately I've be berated by more than a couple friends and colleagues about being part of a community that they describe as being for juveniles.  One of these days I'll get to a Dev meet or some other event where there are deviants, or maybe I'll even buy a DA shirt/hat or something so other Deviants can spot me on the street.

Do you comment, fave, or both?
Generally I :+fav: 3x as much as I comment.  Usually this happens because I like to free myself from looking at art with a critical eye.  Being a trained filmmaker I can't watch a film without the technician in me wanting to pull it apart and I believe that takes away a lot of the visceral enjoyment of the work.  I have a bit a technical training in art, but not like film and I just choose to not go into the technical analysis when looking at art.

Do you participate in clubs or contests here on DA?
I am a part of a couple of clubs and participate occasionally, but not very often.

What are the things you wish you could draw better?
Definitely landscapes and environments

Are you a subscriber?
Yes, thanks to a generous and compassionate individual

How many hours a day do you spend on DA?
Easily 4

Are you a fast, slow, or medium typer?
Slow to medium by today's txt message standard.

What is your favorite emoticon?
:w00t:

What is the most annoying thing people ask you?
Haven't had this situation pop up, but one guy did basically try to ask me to model some super detailed project essentially for free.  Had the guy not kept avoiding the issue of price I may have done it for free since it was a subject/character I had some interest in but the dude seemed a little too intent on thinking he was going to pull a fast on me. (lol)

What inspires you?
Fantasy/Fiction takes life and amplifies it.  Twists it sometime or just scrutinizes life and the idea of seeing different perspectives unfold different ideas inspires me.

Do you use any traditional media?
Dabbled with watercolor, but I definitely feel the need from time to time to really investigate and explore that fully.

Do you associate people online with their icons?
At first I generally do, but It also depends:  If it's a model than you see images of them frequently you associate them with their self-portraits.  If it's  an artist than you generally tend to associate them with their avatar.

Have you ever suggested a Daily Deviation?
Yep...Probably 3 or more per month.

Everyone has considered leaving DA once or twice. Have you? Why?
One time I did, but it was about a specific situation dealing with how a gallery was set up and somehow what 1 admin said didn't hold up with another admin....It was complicated, but it worked itself out.

AutoDesk SketchBook Mobile...Apple take over?

...for iPhone/iPod Touch

(My Healthcare Journal is still below)

I don't think I've mentioned it before, but it honestly creeps me out to see AutoDesk bending over backwards to develop for Apple customers given how anti Apple they were for about the last 16 or so years.  It has me thinking that a potential Apple acquisition of AutoDesk may be in the works.  Apple doesn't acquire companies that don't write software for their OS, but they have bought a company that ported their software to the Mac after being approached about with acquisition talks.  Apple my want AD, but they may want AD to absorb the cost of porting the apps to avoid having to answer to the shareholders.  It's just speculation on my part and yes I understand that the Mac has exploded as a platform over the last couple of years so a lot of new developers are on board, but this seems different.  It wasn't that long ago that even after seemingly years of vocal architects telling AutoDesk they wanted AutoCAD on the Mac that AutoDesk pretty much said the best they could do was an AutoDesk 3D object viewer for AutoCAD objects on the Mac.  Now, about two years later, they are seemingly writing ports of all or almost all of their existing apps on the Mac and developing new technologies like this 3D Sketch technology exclusively on he Mac?

What no one is saying about Healthcare...

In order to get into this I'm going to have to layout some background information just because I've found that a lot of people really just have no clue about what's going on as afar as the breakdown of the national budget.  If you already know this stuff you can easily skim the info and move on.
(There's a movie link at the bottom which is a first hand interview of an American living the Czech Republic and his experience with healthcare originally posted by :iconbassanimation: )

Disclaimer: Okay, part of the YouTube user's name is pothead so, many may feel like the info he dispenses is of questionable value...which would be understandable.  He also calls the procedure he had an UltraSound which is clearly not right since those are mostly used to look at unborn babies.  What he had was probably a lipotripsy.  BUT there is still some good general information to glean from this.

First...this is definitely a conversation about the national budget as much as it is about the US health care system and we're talking about TRILLIONS of dollars.  Generally, I've found that many people tend to believe that programs like National Welfare absorb significant portions of the budget.

FACT:  Welfare accounts for about .00016% of the national budget.

Conversely, I've also found that a lot of people have, for whatever reason, decided that a number of other "Wasteful" expenditures which they generally can't name are responsible for our Ginormous budgets and national debt.

FACT:  Social Security is BY FAR the largest budget item on the US budget list.  Social Security accounts for 50%-60% national budget and probably 70% of the national debt.  National Security is between 12%-18% of the national budget the last time I checked.  MediCare/MedicAid is responsible for something like 80% of the Social Security bill.

I posted all of that just to basically try to start to put things into perspective.  Most people will immediately say "What the Hell?"  How did MediCare/MedicAid get so big in the first place...and more importantly what exactly is MediCare/MedicAid?

MediCare/MedicAid is U.S. sponsored health insurance for citizens over the age of 65.  In other words it's health insurance for medical patients that require the most medical care and the most expensive medical care.  Some people might even have the obtuse opinion that states something like this "Cut those old frickers loose, They're holdin us back!"  There are some elected officials whose opinions are fairly close to that, but I'll dig deeper on that a little further down.  The reason why it's critical to get Social Security fixed NOW is because the Baby Boomer generation, the largest age group in the country, are about to collectively turn 65 over the next couple of years.  Even with the smaller age groups up to this point Social Security has brought the U.S. economy to it's knees.  If something doesn't change the U.S. will come out on the other side of "Baby Boomer" MediCare FUBAR'd (fucked up beyond all recognition)  We really shouldn't want to be in that position.

Here's the thing many democratic government officials are thinking but won't say...health insurance is pretty profitable if you don't have to cover old people which is where private Health Insurance has taken up exclusive residency at this point.  The idea is that if the government can get elders out of the Medicare system that make a $250,000 plus per year that can easily afford their own private insurance, add some younger healthier people that require less care and bring some more profitability to government health care insurance roles and cut out out some ineffective medical policies that cost tons of dough without producing tons of results they can resolve the looming Social Security Budget Crisis by making government health insurance solvent.  By introducing a public option they can bring down the cost of private health insurance/health care by creating a health care insurance company that operates WAY BELOW the 300%-1000% profit margins that private insurance companies enjoy now.  A public option would also allow the government to hold the health care industry accountable for success and failure rates and use that as additional leverage in negotiating better pricing (at least for those in the government plan which would be a lot.)  Private insurers will be forced to cut their profit margins and aggressively negotiate for lower medical costs instead of just cutting services/options for insurance holders.

So one thing you might ask is "This makes perfectly obvious sense what's everybody screaming about?"  As promised earlier I said that some people might have the obtuse opinion that states something like this "Cut those old frickers loose, They're holdin us back!"  and that there were some elected officials whose opinions are fairly close to that right?  Well here it is, Republicans basically have no interest in making the current MediCare/MedicAid system solvent, they want to blow it up and push all elderly citizens into the private health insurance sector.  They want to provide vouchers which represent a fraction of medical care expenses that would be covered by MediCare/MedicAid.  With the way private insurers operate this is the way you want to go if you want to reduce the U.S. population QUICKLY.  If you want to hear about massive deaths and genocide conspiracy theories for the next 50 years because of something like this voucher plan than it's the way to go.  Republicans have been trying to destroy MediCare and MedicAid for YEARS.  You might ask "Well, the Republicans had the presidency, the House and the Congress majority for the better part of 8 years why didn't they do this then?"  The simple answer is that self-preservation rules strongly in all of these parties.  Destroying MediCare/MedicAid years ago would have destroyed many republicans political careers, so they are content to try to do this while the seated president is a Democrat so that they can eventually shift blame.  If this isn't the first bill that's voted on and it lasts until the next election and Republicans loose more seats, or Massachusetts seats an interim congress person before the next actual election it could be a moot point and the the new Health Care plan could get pushed through without any Republican support.

My personal feeling on this is that the Obama administration needs to keep pushing this, BUT again start the rumbling of a smaller bill that would allow the legal import of Canadian prescription medications sooner.  I think he should have pushed this first, because it would have easily made it through the voting process and it probably could roll through just as easily now as well.  Legalizing cheaper meds from Canada would have an immediate positive impact on those that need them and it would give all concerned a segue into actually researching a "Single Payer" government run health care system and it's benefits.  Personally, I could care less about the "Public Option" eventually possibly turning into a single payer system even though I don't think it will happen as long as private health insurance companies run their businesses honeslty.  Legalizing Marijuana FOR MEDICINAL PURPOSES ONLY is also something that could possibly help win the Health insurance battle, most Doctor's agree that for a couple of conditions it's proven to be the most effective pain reliever available and going State by State creates more problems than it solves.

Right now most people are disgusted with the way health insurance works and their ever shrinking options with insurance that they pay copious amounts of money for and it's just a hot button topic.  Unless some very clear improvements are delivered quickly many will assume that it will only make things worse.  It's unfortunate that a lot of people either don't remember or choose to ignore how much better health insurance was before the Bush administration was installed.
